FlockGuide is an independent backyard-chicken resource run by a small editorial team. We answer the questions new keepers actually ask, from "how much space does a hen need?" to "why did my chicken stop laying?", and we turn the answers into clear guides you can act on.

We are researchers and writers, not a single farm. That shapes how we work: instead of telling you what worked in one backyard, we read the university extension bulletins and veterinary references, compare what the authorities actually say, and cite our sources so you can check the work yourself. Today more than 120 of our guides carry a Sources list at the bottom.

How We Research

Chicken advice online is full of confident contradictions. We try to cut through it by leaning on primary, expert sources rather than other blogs:

• University cooperative extensions (the poultry science and small-flock programs at land-grant universities) for husbandry, feed, and management.
• The Merck Veterinary Manual and USDA for health, disease, and biosecurity.
• The Livestock Conservancy and breed registries for breed history, standards, and traits.
• For our state and city keeping laws, we verify hen limits, rooster rules, and setbacks against the actual municipal code, and we flag when an ordinance should be confirmed with the city before you build.

How We Choose Products

• We evaluate products on published specifications, patterns across large numbers of verified owner reviews, and feedback from keeping communities, and we say plainly when a cheaper option is enough or when a popular product is overkill.
